grad trippin' in south korea #2

Hello everybody! How's your weekend going? We have a long weekend in Singapore this week because it's our National Day this coming Monday. I had an absolutely exciting day yesterday, I was part of the celebrations for the Youth Olympic Flame's arrival in Singapore! It was an amazing night and I will share more once I get my rolls of film from yesterday developed!

For now, I am going to continue posting my photographs of South Korea! Jeju, South Korea is absolutely beautiful. Although it's a tourist destination, it is still fairly underdeveloped. Unless you are in a tour group or have rented a car, it's pretty difficult to get around on your own with the available public transport. despite all that, we still managed to visit a good amount of places.

(flickr's new photo page is sort of annoying for getting the url of photographs to post.)

More scenes around Sangamburi, a crater created by an extinct volcano...

All In House, filming location for the popular South Korean drama, All In...

Taking the long walk out of the All In House to the main road...

The next day, we went to Mara-do, the southernmost island in South Korea...

Mara-do is considered fairly off the beaten track for tourists to Jeju. The only way to get there is via a ferry that leaves something like every half an hour to an hour. Most of the Mara-do bound tourists were Koreans. We saw only one other family on the ferry that weren't Koreans. Mara-do is home to less than a hundred people. We found out the ancestors were gamblers who ran away from the mainland to escape their debts. At least they had the good sense to choose such a picturesque place!

The sign reads: South Korea's Most Southern Point.

Mara-do itself is really small, a walk around the island is supposed to take about half an hour. If you don't want to walk, you could rent a little golf cart-like vehicle to take you around. My friend and I chose to walk, enjoying the (very) strong wind and the scenery. The only food available are from some beach shacks at the southern point of the island and a convenience store. The food are mainly fresh seafood caught by the islanders. We got to try some shellfish, seaweed, sea snails, octopus and other unidentifiable seafood. It was amazing though, so fresh and sweet!

An unexpected sight of a church, with such an interesting design

More of Mara-do in the next roll...
